Clean Green Community: Empowering Women with Eco-Bricks to Protect Indus River
A gender-just climate solution turning waste into opportunity.
The Clean Green Community project transforms environmental hazards into pathways for inclusion, empowerment, and sustainability. By converting plastic and electronic waste into eco-friendly bricks using river sand, this community-led initiative protects the ancient River Indus while empowering young women, trans individuals, and youth environmental engineers to lead green construction enterprises. Grounded in gender justice, circular economy, and local leadership, this initiative builds a resilient, inclusive, and climate-smart future for Pakistan.

The Problem
The River Indus, Pakistan’s lifeline and cultural soul, is now the second most plastic-polluted river in the world. Contaminated by plastic dumping and e-waste, its water and ecosystem are under grave threat—affecting millions who depend on it for agriculture, drinking water, and survival.
In Meher Ali slum, Hyderabad—home to 10,000+ marginalized people—plastic waste is dumped and burned along the riverbanks. The toxic pollution severely affects local health, especially of women, trans individuals, and children, while destroying biodiversity. This project emerges as a community-powered, gender-just response that transforms waste into eco-solutions.
Gender Justice at the Core
This project places women’s rights and gender equality at the center of climate action. We:
- Prioritize participation of marginalized women, Indigenous Brohi and Sindhi speakers, and trans persons.
- Train women in green tech, business management, and leadership.
- Promote equal decision-making, ownership, and profit-sharing.
- Reclaim waste collection as a dignified, innovative, and community-owned enterprise.
- Improve access to health, clean water, mobility, and safe public spaces.

GREEN SPACE
Eco-friendly Bags and Reducing the Carbon Footprint
Plastic bags, made from crude oil and natural gas, have a high carbon footprint. Producing one plastic bag uses about 0.48 megajoules of energy, equivalent to driving a car 1 kilometer. The short useful life of a plastic bag (about 12 minutes) contrasts sharply with its environmental impact, as five bags can release 1kg of CO2.
Eco-friendly Bag Alternatives and Wildlife Protection
Plastic bags harm wildlife by contributing to climate change and causing direct physical harm. Animals mistake plastic for food, leading to ingestion, infections, starvation, or death. Microplastics from these bags disrupt growth and reproduction in marine life.
Eco-friendly Bags Reduce Costs and Extend Business Value
Reusable bags are more durable and environmentally friendly, reducing business costs and complying with plastic bag taxes in many US states. They also serve as effective marketing tools, with studies showing 73% of shoppers owning custom reusable bags, thereby enhancing brand visibility and value.
